Transpersonal psychology is in area of psychology that integrates psychological concepts with spiritual experiences and aims to scientifically ground spiritual practices and principles. Transpersonal psychology explores the whole human experience, encompassing multiple ideas from philosophy, health, art, neuroscience, spirituality and psychology. Transpersonal psychology considers all aspects of being human to help us heal, this includes exploring our spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional, physical and creative parts to ourselves and our lives. It also encourages exploring one’s spiritual beliefs and experiences. By integrating our beliefs and spiritual practices such as mindfulness or meditation, we can improve our overall wellbeing and mental health.
From a therapeutic perspective, transpersonal psychology is a humanistic approach that views all life experiences as valuable and opportunities for growth and change. Rather than pushing away and hiding our difficulties, this approach encourages us to welcome any challenges we face. It also hopes to provide individuals with a deep understanding of themselves to help them achieve their highest potential, gain clarity and understand their true nature and purpose. This can lead to individuals understanding themselves better and making more authentic life decisions that align with their core values and beliefs.
The goal of transpersonal counselling is to support your journey toward self-discovery and transformation. Individuals embarking on their therapeutic journey are encouraged to explore their inner world, feelings and experiences as well as discovering and embracing their inner strengths. By uncovering and using their strengths, clients can begin the process of long-term change and develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world.
The therapeutic relationship is of central importance to transpersonal counselling and both counsellor and client must feel connected on the same level of consciousness. The relationship is seen as a collaborative partnership in which both work towards the clients healing and growth. The client is encouraged to take an active role in the therapeutic process by taking actions that align with their true self and beliefs. Transpersonal counselling involves building and developing an individual’s strengths, inner resources, free will, spirituality and self-development. It can involve using techniques such as imagery, meditation, mindfulness, nature, journal writing, working with dreams, inner-child healing, goal setting, and creative art making.
Beginning a transpersonal journey is a continuous process of self-discovery, healing, and realising your full potential. It is a commitment to your personal and spiritual growth and overall mental wellbeing.
