Therapeutic Tarot – High Priestess

While the previous card, The Magician, could be interpreted as our conscious awareness and tools, The High Priestess can be interpreted as our unconscious awareness and tools.

The Forgotten Sense

The High Priestess is a card of intuition, which is sometimes the overlooked or unconscious sense we all possess. When we think of our senses of touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing, they all provide our body and brain with information and they are all tools we are aware of and can use to help us through life. However, our intuition can also provide us extremely valuable information about who we are and how we truly wish to live our lives. It can give us a compass to navigate life’s challenges, decisions and desires to enable us to live authentically.

Inner Voice and Wisdom

Our intuition is our inner voice, wisdom and vision; it is the deeper part of us that holds the answers we need. Sometimes we may not realise we know the answer to our challenge, sometimes we avoid this answer, deny it or push it away if we fear it however the answer is always there within us. The High Priestess asks us to trust ourselves and to be honest with ourself about how we truly feel or want we really want, this can then help us to reveal or accept what our intuition is trying to tell us.

Intuition vs Fear

But how do we know what is intuition and what is fear? Look to the quieter areas of your mind, the little nudges, the quiet feelings that feel deeper than fear and anxiety. Your gut feelings and intuition run deeper beyond anxiety and fear, you may feel apprehensive about these feelings but they also feel more empowering or more authentic. To begin to access your intuition, remember it is always present but can sometimes be clouded by emotions or circumstances. Therefore, take a quiet and calm moment to yourself and notice what comes up for you and notice how you feel about the answers your intuition is providing.

Inner Critic vs Inner Wisdom

Another reminder the High Priestess can highlight is the distinction between our inner critic and inner wisdom. Our inner critic will stop at nothing to tear us down and make us feel bad about ourselves, whereas our inner wisdom and intuition knows your best interests, knows what is right for you and although will not always tell you what you want to hear, it will always provide an answer out of love and authenticity. Therefore, it is our job to transform and quiet our inner critic to allow our inner wisdom to shine.

When you quiet the mind, the whispers of the soul can speak.
